Jenny Schmid
Libertines is a stone lithograph printed on Yatsuo Japanese paper. It was then mounted to heavyweight German paper, cut out by hand, and attached to brackets which stand ¾” from the wall. This places the print in low relief, casting shadows and taking the work out of a traditional print format. Like much of her work, Libertines rethinks the roles boys and girls are asked to play. Schmid imagines two worlds governed by opposing philosophies of life: libertinism and nihilism. Though reality may exist as a blending of the two, Schmid’s prints confront our expectations of gender, dominance, and partnership.

Jenny Schmid lives and works in Minneapolis, MI, where she runs Bikini Press International and is an assistant professor at the University of Minneapolis, Department of Art. Schmid recently received a McKnight Fellowship and The Bush Artists grant, in addition to being a Fulbright Fellow in 1998. Schmid creates a fictitious world that inverts traditional gender roles and obligations; dark, dense, and intensely beautiful, these works present the realm of adolescence as the site of the difficult construction of sexual identity.
