Eddie Martinez
about the artist
Born in Connecticut, Eddie Martinez is a Brooklyn-based artist currently working in painting, drawing, and print. Martinez draws constantly, creating an idiosyncratic aesthetic language that has become his trademark. Martinez explains that personal objects and repeated symbols “imprint” themselves on his brain. These cartoonish skulls and daffy duck-like characters emerge in Martinez’s paintings, quickly evolving into compositions that Martinez rarely plans in advance. At times his works reference western traditions of portraiture or still life, though these conventions are filtered through Martinez’s distinct sense of color and line. Martinez gravitates towards contemporary materials such as spray paint and marker that work in conjunction with traditional materials like charcoal and oil paint. Martinez exhibits around the world, completing solo shows with ZieherSmith in New York, Seomi and Tuus in South Korea, and Peres Projects Mitte in Berlin. He has been featured in notable publications including the New York Times, Interview Magazine, Art in America, and Artforum.
