CELEBRATING the CENTENNIAL of KRISHNA REDDY

Blackburn Study Center

Krishna Reddy and the Printmaking Workshop curated by Shilpi Chandra March 1 -  May 24, 2025 OPENING RECEPTION: SAT. MARCH 1, 3-6PM | Delving into the history and impact of viscosity printing as developed by Krishna Reddy in the 1970s, places Reddy in the role of teacher and influence for a wide network of overlooked and underrepresented artists.

In conjunction with PRINT CENTER New York | Jan 23–May 21, 2025 Krishna Reddy: Heaven in a Wildflower a monographic exhibition on the celebrated artist curated by Sarah Burney. The exhibition brings together over 50 prints alongside key sculptures, ephemera, and working materials demonstrating Reddy’s material and conceptual approach to the groundbreaking viscosity printmaking technique he developed in the 1950s and 60s.

Workshop | Collagraph Viscosity

Saturday, February 22 | 1- 4 PM

Honoring Krishna Reddy’s lifelong commitment to pedagogy, process, and public access to the arts, Print Center New York and EFA Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop (EFA RBPMW) are co-hosting a series of hands-on workshops in conjunction with both organizations’ spring 2025 exhibitions on the artist.

Join acclaimed artist Michael Kelly Williams for this immersive single-session, all-levels workshop on collagraph viscosity printing. Collagraphy is an additive plate making process that lends itself to viscosity techniques. Free from acids and grounds, it incorporates assembled materials to create rich, textured surfaces on the printing plate. Participants will use rollers of different densities to apply ink onto their plates. The plates are then printed on an etching press with dampened paper, allowing for dramatic embossment.

Reddy worked primarily by carving metal plates using flexible shaft tools and his process was informed by a deep interest in sculpture. Michael Kelly Williams is a former student of Krishna Reddy. In 1980, Williams attended Reddy’s color print atelier at New York University and learned viscosity techniques firsthand. The two developed a friendship and Williams later assisted Reddy with printing in his Soho loft studio.

Registration is required.

Hands-On Intensive | Intaglio Color Viscosity Printmaking with MARK JOHNSON

Saturdays March 8, March 15, & March 22 (1–5PM)

$300 Members | $345 Class w/ membership | $350 Non-members

PRICE INCLUDES MATERIALS COST and 12 hours of free studio time

(expires one month from final class) | Prerequisite: Etching I

Honoring Krishna Reddy’s lifelong commitment to pedagogy, process, and public access to the arts, Print Center New York and EFA Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop (EFA RBPMW) are co-hosting a series of hands-on workshops in conjunction with both organizations’ spring 2025 exhibitions on the artist.

Join artist and professor Mark Johnson for this in-depth intensive geared towards artists who have some previous etching experience. In this three-part course, artists will learn single plate color printing using color viscosity printmaking techniques they can apply to their own practices. This includes plate preparation, viscosity printing demonstrations and advanced single plate printing techniques.

Mark Johnson is a printmaking instructor at New York University and Marymount Manhattan College, as well as the Coordinator of the Print Area at the Department of Art and Art Professions at NYU. He assisted Krishna printing in his studio and co-taught with Krishna for six years in his long running course Color Print Atelier at NYU.

This intensive workshop requires tuition to cover the cost of materials. Two scholarships are available. Space is limited to 10 participants and registration is required.

Demonstration | Intro to Viscosity Printing

Friday, April 25, 6:30 - 7:30 PM

Honoring Krishna Reddy’s lifelong commitment to pedagogy, process, and public access to the arts, Print Center New York and EFA Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop (EFA RBPMW) are co-hosting a series of hands-on workshops in conjunction with both organizations’ spring 2025 exhibitions on the artist.

Join renowned master printer Kathy Caraccio for a free viscosity printing demonstration and learn how to exploit the viscosity of ink to print multiple colors from a single intaglio plate. This in-depth demonstration will introduce the technique and is meant for those with no prior experience with either intaglio etching or collagraph printmaking. We recommend that all students bring a notebook and/or sketchbook for collecting information during the demonstration process.

This demonstration kicks off a weekend-long celebration of Krishna Reddy including a symposium at Print Center New York.

Registration is required.

EFA Robert Blackburn Workshop (map)

Join acclaimed artist Joyce Wellman in this immersive single-session, all-levels monotype session. Participants will explore using drypoint plates and experimenting with different ink viscosities and transparencies to create unique, expressive monotype prints.

Joyce Wellman met Krishna Reddy in the late 1970s at Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop, where Reddy was teaching color viscosity workshops.
